A soft play rocker is the piece parents buy second and wish they'd bought first. It takes up almost no floor space, it works from the moment a baby can sit unaided, and it gives a child something to do on their own in a corner of the room.

Why a rocker, rather than another block set?
Rocking is vestibular input — the sense that tells a child where their body is in space. It's the same system a swing works, and it's genuinely calming for most children. A rocker is often the thing that settles an overstimulated toddler when nothing else does.
Practically, a rocker also:
- Builds core strength and balance, because staying upright on a moving surface is work.
- Takes under a square metre, so it fits a bedroom or a corner of a living room.
- Doubles as a seat when nobody's rocking on it.
- Needs no assembly and nothing to lose.
Single or two-seated?
Single rockers suit one child, a smaller room, or a first rocker for a baby around 9–12 months. They're lighter to move and the cheapest way in.
Two-seated rockers are the right call for siblings, twins, or a child who'll have friends over — and for nurseries, where sharing is the point. They also rock more slowly and steadily because of the extra length, which some younger babies prefer.
If you're torn and the budget stretches, two-seated is the one that stays useful longer. A single rocker with two children in the house becomes a negotiation.
The four types we make
Classic foam rockers
The traditional shape: a curved foam base with one or two seat wells, in wipe-clean covered foam. Flip most of them over and the curve becomes a stepped bridge to climb — two toys in one. Best for 9 months to about 4 years.
Bouclé bean rockers
Same idea, softer silhouette, wrapped in textured bouclé rather than wipe-clean fabric. These are the ones that look like furniture. Choose bouclé if the rocker lives in a living room or a photographed space; choose classic covered foam if it lives where food happens.
Ride-on rockers
The Rocker Car and the Banana Rocker are shaped toys rather than plain curves. They invite pretend play in a way an abstract shape doesn't — a car gets driven, a banana gets ridden. Best from around 12 months, when imaginative play starts.
What age is a soft play rocker for?
From around 9 months, once a baby sits steadily without support. Start with them sitting in it while you rock gently, and stay within arm's reach.
12 months to 3 years is the main window — independent climbing on and off, self-propelled rocking, and the flip-over climbing use.
Beyond 3, it becomes a reading seat, a den component or a pretend vehicle rather than a rocker. Still used, just differently.
Safety and placement
- Leave clear space behind and in front. A rocker that hits a radiator or a coffee table at the end of its arc is the one real hazard. Allow half a metre each way.
- Carpet or mats underneath. On laminate, a rocker travels across the room as a child rocks. On carpet or play mats it stays put.
- One child per seat. Two children in one seat well is how tipping happens.
- Check the foam density. A rocker takes concentrated weight on a small area, so low-density foam deforms quickly and the curve flattens. High-density foam keeps its rock.
- UKCA or CE marking and conformity with EN 71.
- Supervise under-twos, always.
