Pastel soft play ball pit set up for a children's party

Soft Play Party Ideas: Themes, Games, Food and Timings for Ages 1 to 5

A soft play party is one of the easiest birthday parties to get right for little ones. Toddlers and preschoolers don't need entertainers or complicated games. Give them soft foam to climb, a slide to whizz down and a ball pit to dive into, and they'll happily play for hours. Add a few simple touches and you've got a party the grown-ups enjoy too.

Whether you're hiring soft play for your party or using your own equipment at home, these soft play party ideas will help you plan the day.

Where to hold a soft play party

You don't need a soft play centre. More families are now bringing the soft play to them, which means no shared time slots, no strangers' children and no rushing out when your hour is up.

  • At home: a cleared living room or conservatory works well for up to 8 to 10 little ones.
  • In the garden: lovely on a dry summer day, with a gazebo for shade and a backup plan if it rains.
  • In a village or church hall: the best choice for bigger guest lists, with space for parents to sit and chat.

Soft play party themes

Soft play colours make theming easy. Pick a colourway and build the decorations around it.

Pastel dream

Soft pinks, mints and lemons with a matching pastel ball pit and balloon garland. A favourite for first birthdays and photos.

Neutral and natural

White, cream and beige soft play with eucalyptus, wooden toys and kraft paper bags. Calm, stylish and perfect for christenings too.

Castles and knights

A foam castle set becomes the centrepiece. Add paper crowns, cardboard shields and a "royal" cake.

Under the sea

Blue and white balls in the ball pit become the ocean. Add fish cut-outs, bubbles and a treasure hunt in the balls.

Rainbow party

Multicoloured soft play, rainbow balloons and a rainbow layer cake. Bright, cheerful and great for 3 and 4 year olds.

A simple soft play party timeline

Two hours is plenty for under 5s. Here's a running order that works:

  1. 0:00 to 0:45: free play. Let children arrive and head straight to the soft play. No organised games needed yet.
  2. 0:45 to 1:00: a couple of easy games. See our ideas below. Keep them short and optional.
  3. 1:00 to 1:30: food. Sit everyone down away from the soft play so crumbs don't end up in the ball pit.
  4. 1:30 to 1:45: candles and cake. The big moment. Have your camera ready.
  5. 1:45 to 2:00: last play and party bags. A final burst of fun before home time.

Tip for first birthdays: plan the party around nap time. Late morning, after a morning nap, usually works best.

Soft play party games for toddlers and preschoolers

  • Ball pit treasure hunt: hide a few plastic toys or coloured balls and let children dig to find them.
  • Colour sort: call out a colour and see who can find a ball that matches. Great for 2 and 3 year olds.
  • Follow the leader: an adult leads the way over the climbing blocks and down the slide.
  • Musical statues: play music while they climb and freeze when it stops.
  • Bubble time: a bubble machine near the soft play keeps the youngest guests mesmerised.

Keep games optional. Some toddlers will want to join in and some will just want to keep sliding, and both are fine.

Party food that works with soft play

Choose finger food that's easy for little hands and not too messy:

  • Mini sandwiches, wraps and crackers
  • Cucumber, carrot sticks, grapes cut lengthways and berries
  • Cheese cubes, breadsticks and dips
  • Mini muffins or fairy cakes
  • Water and diluted juice in lidded cups

Set up the food table in a separate area and have a "no food or drinks on the soft play" rule. It keeps the equipment clean and avoids choking risks while children are climbing.

Party bag ideas

  • Bubbles
  • Stickers and a mini colouring book
  • A small soft toy or board book
  • A slice of birthday cake
  • A few coloured play balls as a fun reminder of the ball pit

Soft play party ideas by age

First birthday

Keep it gentle. Low climbing shapes like the Mini Climbie, a soft play mat and a low ball pit are perfect for crawlers and early walkers.

Ages 2 to 3

This is the peak soft play age. A step and slide set, a ball pit and some crawl tunnels will keep them busy for the whole party.

Ages 4 to 5

Older children love building their own obstacle courses. Large foam block and castle sets let them create, climb and play together.

Keeping everyone safe

  • Always have an adult supervising the soft play area.
  • Keep shoes, food and drinks off the equipment.
  • Separate the youngest crawlers from bigger, more boisterous children if you can.
  • Place soft play on a flat surface, away from stairs, radiators and sharp furniture.

Frequently asked questions

What age is a soft play party for?

Soft play parties are ideal from first birthdays up to around age 5 or 6. Choose lower, gentler pieces for babies and larger climbing and block sets for older children.

How long should a soft play party last?

Around two hours is perfect for under 5s. That's enough time for play, food and cake without little ones getting overtired.

How many children can play on soft play at once?

It depends on the size of the set. A small set suits around 6 to 8 toddlers at a time, while larger party sets can handle bigger groups. Taking turns in smaller groups keeps play safe.

Can I have a soft play party at home?

Yes. A cleared living room, conservatory or garden works well. Our soft play party at home guide explains how much space you need.

Do you deliver soft play for parties?

Yes. We deliver, set up and collect soft play for parties across Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Merseyside and Staffordshire.
